historically speaking i believe it started in Greek theater. Irony as well as puns and clumsiness were common areas of comedy. Clowns can date back years, most likely from some of the first empires. its common to have a form of entertainment for those of the royal court.

entertainers > fools > jesters > performers > clowns >comedians.

They were originally caricatures of the rural poor. It was basically rich people making fun of country bumpkins, which is still pretty common.

Originally clowns were depicted as normal people with exaggerated features, like hipsters. Unfortunately, clown designs hasn't evolved much past the 19th century, thus why they appear otherworldly.

they still exist today, they just take on a different form. people that embrace a persona to make others laugh. sam hyde is an example of a contemporary clown, for someone that's popular around here.
