Those spikes and shit are a great way for someone to knock the shield off your arm rather than simply dull a blow. Using a shield as a weapon is a last-ditch move, not nearly as effective as a sword, axe or spear.

You want your shield to block and deflect blows, not have shit stuck to it. That would make it useless.

Here anon, I drew a quick diagram to illustrate why historical armor tends not to have spikes on it (shields included). Looking at 1), a strike against the surface will glance off since there's nothing keeping the weapon there. This is the point of plate armor, to glance blows off. In 2), with the spikes, the strike is trapped in-between the spikes, meaning the strike has more of a chance to do more damage. You're basically aiming the enemy's strike onto your body at that point, which means the force of the impact will be felt a lot more.

I know that the early Germanic peoples used spiked bosses on their shields. Spiked bosses were more practical when fighting as in individual, when fighting in a tight formation, you'd just be jabbing back of the guy in front of you. Germanic peoples moved away from spiked bosses by the Migration Era.

As people have pointed out it's a pretty stupid thing.

That said some Scottish targes had single spikes in the centre. It kinda worked fighting the British as they were fighting in a chimp mob rather than a "traditional" tight formation and the British were using muskets with bayonets as opposed to other hand weapons that needed to be deflected.

spikes on shields never worked because it's the edge of the shield that is used offensively, not the flat. Putting spikes on your shield would have been a good way to get it stuck on something and lose it, not to mention the added weight would not have been worth the added utility.
