I know. To me it indicates large naivety, which is not their fault. Like when I was a kid it was almost impossible to imagine what the past looked. Only when I saw tons of pictures and did lots of reading did I get some idea of what it might have looked like. The medievals didn't have the luxury of museums and artistic renderings like we do so they just projected what they saw onto the past. No concepts of presentism or anything like that existed as far as I know, and a lot of the chronicles from the era also try to fit everything into a religious framework.
