An enormous amount of them were in the first 5 months of the war. The Soviets had some really, really bad doctrine when it came to warfare early in the 1940s, and they thought the best way to deter and defeat a threat from the west was to pile up their entire army (or just about) on the border, and threaten to counterattack at the first sign of trouble.
Turns out, that got pretty much their entire border force pocketed up and swallowed, and then you had about 4 months of running and fighting and regrouping and falling back and fighting some more as they tried to patch up something resembling a coherent line.
