Assyrians were the last truely great empire. that's all you need to know

Small farming settlements pop up in the Fertile Crescent around 6000 BCE. Uruk make "fortified cities" around 3500 BCE, even have some early form of primitive pictograph writing, and build early monuments. Sumerians pop up in 2900, and get rekt by Akkadians. Akkadians disappear because "lol, no farms and barbarians invading." Sumerians pop up one more time, write Gilgamesh, and git rekt by Elamites. Assyrians popped up in 1350 BCE, started fucking shit up by the 9th century. They deported undesirables, killed lions, killed people, and generally just made a bloody mess for a few centuries and got destroyed by a coalition of early Iranian/Persian societies.

Really, the Assyrians are the closest you are going to get to the modern definition of an empire. Sure, the Akkadians existed too, but they only lasted two centuries. If you count the three periods of Assyrian history, they got in roughly 1000 years. It's kind of a super sparse rundown, but its what Iv'e heard.

The Sumerian word for king - Lugal - literally translated to "Big Guy."

Are Sumerians the original Baneposters?

Or dos Baneposting predate civilization itself?

Akkad definitely seemed to be a real empire, despite their short reign.

Though personally the Ur III kingdom is my favorite.

Nimrod, the son of Cush went to Mesoptamia and was a mighty hunter in the sight of the Lord. He built Erech, Akkad, Babylon and all those kingdoms then tried to build a tower to heaven. God got mad and dispersed his people. Later these places were repopulated

It was the birthplace of civilization and shit. Then it got overshadowed by places like Rome and Persia.

Akkadians didn't disappear, they were splintered. North Akkadians became Assyrians, South Akkadians became Babylonians. They spoke the same language: Akkadian. It was basically Prussia vs Austria for 1500 years there.
