How did it happen?

If I remember correctly (I'm not the best at Chinese history, so forgive any inaccuracies), basically a bunch of resentment from Han Chinese at their Manchu overlords mixed with anger at the government's reluctance to adopt modern technology and ways of thinking boiled over into a military coup/revolution, where they overthrew the government and ended all the Mandate of Heaven bullshit, and established a republic. However, the republic was weak as fuck, and they handed power over to a guy called Yuan Shikai, who crowned himself emperor again. That didn't last long like at all, a couple weeks if I recall correctly, people were dead set on a new government and he was old so he died a year later. When he died there was no republic but now no emperor or main guy in power, so there was a power vacuum, leading to warlords taking over.

How were the KMT racist? Didn't they have a flowery vision of Hans, Tibetans, Manchus, Mongols, and Muslims all holding hands? Not trying to shitpost I'm genuinely curious
