are there any history books that are more about "how" and"why" rather than telling the events like a story book? for example simply discussion "what was the most important reason for first world war and why was it more important than the others?"

it would be nice if you would recommend books on :
unification if italy/germany
russian revolution
first world war

wat..writing a narrative is exactly the same as saying "how something happened and why" just not taking into account larger things outside the characters discussed
