I thought that meme was debunked after linguistic scholars like David Neil MacKenzie and Garnik Asatrian said that their language was closter to Persian/Parthian but due to the major differences it was still classified as a NW-Iranian lanaguage.
While Old Azari/Talysh is the closest language to actually claim any resemblance to be an offshoot of Median.

Which makes sense considering the name Azerbaijan was taking from Atropatene, which was the Median satrapy/autonomous vassal region in NW-Iran to the different Persian empires but got Turkified in the end and the language (minus dialects like Tati/Talysh) died out. So "modern" Medes are nothing more than Turk LARPers.
