One problem with Genesis being an allegory I have is how extremely typical the cosmology and cosmogony is in an iron age Near Eastern context.

The Greeks, Canaanites, Babylonians all believed the Earth was a flat disk sitting in water, covered by a metallic or stone dome.

The creation account in Genesis and Enuma Elish have almost the same chronology.

It's like if a thousand years from now the big bang turned out to be wrong and people started saying we meant it as an allegory.

Fuck off. Genesis 1 is contradictory with Genesis 2, therefore the Bible is automatically disregarded as factual.

Shitty bait.

It actually isn't, as long as you start with the premise that Adam is only supposed to be the ultimate progenitor of the Hebrew people (because who cares about anyone else, right?), and not of mankind in general.

Which, admittedly, isn't what mainstream Abrahamic religions have done since, but there's really nothing in the original texts that the proto-Jewish polytheists were using that indicates that they thought that Adam was the forefather of the entire world.

Genesis is literal fact.

Only butthurt atheists deny history. Seriously, this image makes them angry as fuck because it gets in the way of their feelings.

Maybe God made additional people after Adam and Eve, Its just that Adam and Ever were first?

>yfw "the firmament" is the edge of the universe
>>
>>2390029
More likely the other way around, what with things like Cain going off to build a city after murdering Abel and otherwise there being all of 3-5 people on the planet.
>>
>>2389985
Where does Genesis mention flat disks?
>>
>>2390041
Check out Eric Dubay and Rob Skiba's videos on youtube.

They debunk the heliocentric model.
>>
>>2390044
I didn't understand your answer. I'm just making a point about genesis not mentioning anything about flat disks.

One problem stems in that something in the ancient world could be both factual and allegorical, and there is a difference between the orignial intent and how Christian interpreted it.

There has been a long tradition of mystic interpretation of the torah dating back to before Christ. At the same time that does not mean Jews did not take at least elements of the story literally.

Same with early Christians

>all this shitty christian fanfiction
no
>>
>>2390041
Nowhere, but Genesis explicitly states two elements on the ancient cosmology, the firmament and the celestial sea and the view of a disk shaped earth is hinted at elsewhere in the bible.
>>
>>2390075
Maimonides kind of heavily alludes to the two levels of understanding. One for the unwashed masses of believers that need a very litteral picture to do the right thing and gnosis about allegorical interpretation that was passed down the generations and that is only tought to those who can understand.
>>
>>2389985
For fuck sake when will you all will finally understand that Genesis 1 is a fucking poem?
>>

>The narrative in [Genesis] is not written in a literary style proper to allegory, as in the Song of Songs, but from beginning to end in a style proper to history, as in the Books of Kings and the other works of that type
Augustine, The Literal Meaning of Genesis

Kali Yuga timeline is cooler.

>citing Augustine as an authority

HAHAHAHAHA.

Also, he was wrong, AS USUAL. The narrative style of Genesis is entirely in keeping with that of other known fictional chapters, such as Exodus.

Maybe the others are an allegory too. Either all are allegories or none are.
