Civil War. I'm convinced the only reason Lincoln is regarded kindly by history is because of the Emancipation Proclamation, without which he would more than likely be blamed for the secession and by extension the outbreak of Civil War. Sure that wouldn't be fair at all to the man, but his election undeniably acted as a catalyst for the south to secede and people have blamed presidents for more preposterous things.
