Saying that as India (I know Socialism is why India is still poor), at that time, recently adopted Capitalism after sorting out years of regional instability in it's country. It was socialist before that.
No, I don't think any kind of one party authoritarian socialism would have been possible in western europes sphere of influence after 1989, and that's nothing to say about the problems that were unique to Yugoslavia. My father tells me stories about he never personally bought into the brotherhood and unity stuff growing up there but always assumed he was a minority and was shocked by how 1990 there wasn't a single remnant of it or appreciation for socialism left.

My father's father was, really believed in all of it wholeheartedly too, actually got involved with it before the second world war even during his time as a conscript in kingdom of Yugoslavia army.
