honestly no matter what it was out of the Byzantine's hands, they made a small recovery after retaking the capital from the 4th crusade but by then the Capital was severely depopulated and money/manpower was tough to come by.

What surprises me though is that the Byzantines really did give the Ottoman's hell in the final decades. The fall of Constantinople was the Ottoman's 3rd try at taking the city, failing in 1411 and again in 1422.

The only way the empire could've survived was through help from the Pope/Western Europe. They did start a coalition war against the Ottomans but were mashed at the battle of Varna in 1444, which at that point no one was really willing to challenge the Ottomans anymore.

Genoa did send a few thousand men to help the defense of the capital, but of course that wasn't enough to tip the balance.

Honestly after the coalition's defeat at Varna it was really out of anyone's hands. Gotta have respect for Constantine XI though for going down fighting with his men to the last.

Byzantines were too unstable, they could not form alliances with their neighbors that allowed them to conquer the East. This, prior to the Battle of Manzikert.

The real Romans would've conquered the Middle East, Byzantium never wanted to do this.

Reading about Constantine XI's life is depressing as hell. He tried his best, which I suppose is the best thing that can be said about anyone.
