That's an easy one. I like the end of the vth century until approx. the viith century, when they still had remnants of roman administration.
And also the xvth century, when they began to stop being retarded, at least the elite.

The Age of Alfred because it was weird.

Weird how? Like Wessex struggling for survival against the Danes?

Weird in the way thegns fell in battle defending a slain king.
Early, definitely.
There are so many interesting historical characters during this time period, such as Justinian I, Charlemagne, Boris I, Ivar the Boneless, Æthelred of Wessex, Theoderic the Great, Narses, Basil II etc.
Late seems interesting for various reasons.
It had all of that cultural pessimism, religious mysticism, revival of chivalric romance, and literature became more varied/poetry.
It must have been a living hell during the black death or if you lived in eastern Europe. But Western Europe circa early 1400's sounds pretty comfy.
