>not understanding how chainmail armor works
a swordsman is always going to be a moving target, lunging forwards then darting back, any sword hits will always be glancing blows which will be easily deflected by the armor. The idea is to catch someone off balance or temporarily immobilize them so you can strike with the full weight of the blade which will do significant damage even if the armor itself doesn't fail

Actually, delivering blunt trauma with swords only works with straight swords.
Curved swords are horrendous at delivering impact as rely on the slide/draw.
Even with a full strike, you will not do much with a curved sword if the armor holds.
