Does language play a part in shaping culture or is it only a way to gain access to a certain culture? Would America or English culture be any different if they spoke Old English?

If they spoke Old English, they'd essentially just be Scandinavian speakers and have more in common with the Nordic languages than actually having a language identity of their own.

Language is culture - culture is language.
What matters is the society they are formed in. Language and culture are both children of the societies they came from, rather than being the parents of each other - they are siblings, not parent and child.

But would they have more in common with Nordic culture?

Does this means South America is western?

Of course. Americans have alot in common with their British heritage. It is still found today with its Protestant traditions, apple pie, baseball, and most importantly the tradition of Thanksgiving.
If you are exposed to a language from another people you are bound to accept some cultural norms from them as well.

It's not that American or English culture would be different if they spoke Old English, but they might speak Old English if their culture were different.
It's the culture that shapes the language.
