How did the colour blue come to be associated with conservatism? Likewise, how did red become the colour of socialism/communism?

Arbitrary I mean in the United States red is conservative and blue is liberal. It really is an arbitrary divide.

Communists like to glorify 'mah struggle' and the blood of martyrs etc. I would say that blue is less strongly associated with conservatism than red is with communism, so it is probably just a reactionary thing.
blue team = good guys
red team = bad guys
>allies vs nazis/communists

The red flag was the flag of the commune of paris of the first french revolution. In naval use, it meant "this ship is fighting to the end", so one can see the appeal for the revolutionary government in paris. With the montagnards being the big fans of the flags use, using it as opposed to the tricolour signified "we're the most radical motherfucekrs in this whole revolution."
So when 1848 rolled around and everyone needed a flag, it was the obvious choice for the socialist taking part in what was probably their first proper revolution.
