Before the First Chechen War, almost all Chechens followed Sufism, a peaceful and apolitical form of Islam. However, during the First Chechen War, a lot of Arab mujahideen came to Chechnya in order to help them gain independence. Most of these Arab mujahideen were Wahhabis and Salafi jihadists and they tried to spread their branch of Islam in Chechnya. A lot of Chechens were radicalized by the fact that almost all of them have lost multiple relatives and friends during the Chechen Wars so they found a more violent type of Islam more appealing than a more peaceful type of Islam that their ancestors followed. This is how Wahhabism and Salafi jihadism became popular in this region and this is why there are so many Chechen fighters in the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. However, the majority of Chechens are still Sufis, you just don't hear much about them because they almost never do anything that can make the news.

Well most of them arent. The problem is their seperatist became increasingly more pious and fundamentalist during their struggle against the russians effectivly turning from Nationalists to full blown pan-Islamist Terrorists.
This Pan-Islamism is the reason you can find Chechen extremists fighting in practically every war involving a radical Islamist faction.
