This was actually a myth. It was a rumour being spread that had no basis in fact. The problem is that Indians are pretty stupid and the rumour had spread far enough for no amount of arguing to the contrary to stop it.

the actual issues are more complicated involving both religious issues - a fear that the east india company was attempting to christianise india - the disaffection of some princes and some landed gentry as british land reform placed more land in yeoman/peasant hands, and disaffection in the bengal army as they feared some traditional privileges enjoyed by the bengal army but not the other two presidency armies were going to be lost - in fact the decision had been made to allow those who had signed up previously to keep their privileges but not to extend those to new recruits- so a mix of causes mostly either misguided or entirely selfish, one of the reasons why the sepoy rebellion was not well supported in the country as a whole and the british were able to crush it using mostly native troops
