This is obviously difficult to measure. We can obviously look at the failures of planned economies in Eastern Europe, but Russia got even worse after 1991 when shock therapy was imposed. My opinion is that market capitalism is good and necessary but must be tempered by strong unions, regulations, and a welfare state to prevent excessive accumulation of wealth and power, ensure good conditions for workers, and limit environmental impact.
