redpill me on neoplatonism
A word invented by 19th century German scholars. They just called it Platonism or "philosophy" back then.
>>2321085
A philosophical/metaphysical system which expanded upon the ideas of Plato.
>>2321096
Augustine, Aquinas, Ficino, when they referred to "the platonists", and even "Plato", they would actually cite ideas of Plotinus and Proclus, because they thought that they were part of one continuous tradition.

Hold up. If I refer to "neoconservative" I mean a very different ideology from "conservative" or "Paleoconservative."
Were Platonist not the same way?
>>2321102
Most philosophy after Plato expanded upon his ideas. Neoplatonism would be Alexandria based school of philosophy structured around Ammonius Saccas and his student Plotnius.
The actual academia founded by Plato degenerated into skepticism. So-called neoplatonism was a return to a platonic "orthodoxy". However at the same time it incorporated ideas from Egypt and Asia, but only because they thought that they agreed with Plato.

Was Plato himself influenced by some Egyptian and Asiatic themes?
Not OP but:
Is the neo-platonic idea of "The One" equal to God?
Or does even God obey the notion of The One?

>degenerated

For the people that invented and began using the word "Neoplatonism", yes. They wanted to differentiate between the "rational Plato" from his "superstitious" Alexandrian followers, that were mixing religion with philosophy. But these view have since been debunked.
