Basically after the fall of the Gupta Empire, India resembled Europe in that it was a bunch of states with similar yet diverse cultures, sometimes ruled under smaller Empires like the Karkota Empire or the Harsha Dynasty. Then the Umayyads invaded and achieved some success but were beaten back by the Rajputs. And then some Turkic cunt called Mahmud of Ghazni pretty much tried again for Islam and succeeded in Northern India, setting the footstep for further Muslim expansion.
