I'm pretty new to this board, but last week I learned about the historical relations between the Dutch and Japanese empires. As it turns out, there's a rich history between the two nations, with the dutch being the only western trading partner with Japan for more than 200 years.
I never knew about this 'friendship' (it wasn't actually all that friendly, very strict) and thought it was pretty cool. It also got me wondering about other unlikely friendships and alliances between nations, either today or throughout history. Usually two or more nations that aren't geographically close or culturally not very similar that for some reason maintained a good relationship.
Also things like how the Swedish royal family can be traced to a Frenchman who became king because he was chill with Swedish soldiers when he beat them and just let them go home.

The Ottomans had some weird relationships throughout their history. They hosted the King of Sweden and a lot of his remaining forces after he was cut off by the Russians. They had a court ritual which kept asking the Austrian and Russian delegates where the Polish diplomat was after the partition, they reached out to Dutch protestants and gave them access to North African harbors for anti-Spanish piracy, and so on.
