You know nothing of african cultures influence in latin america. Many of the slaves that came with the Spaniards were from there. Like the black slave who rebelled in the 1500s had a muslim name and was probably from west africa.

As far as I know the Spanidh and Portuguese clergy tried to eliminate as many pagan customs as possible. They couldn't achieve it in Mexico as the population and the myth of Guadalupe was huge but in slave colonies they were extremelly succesful

I can only personally speak for Cuba since my family is originally from there. They were not successful in cuba because it is and was very popular. My grandmother has stories about the blacks using sea shells for divination, faith healing, sacrificing chickens, etc.

But maybe it's because the Kongo were already Catholic, so in the Portuguese and Spanish Americas they were more easily 'integrated' into mainstream Catholicism, whereas West Africans who had their own organized religions retained more of their pagan culture under a Christian veneer. I'm just guessing though.
