commercial aviation as you know it didn't really start until the 1940s, prior to that if you had to go a long distance you either took a train or a ship.

People back than were totally ok with discharging themselfs in chumber pots and just leave them under their bead for the night. I imagine a similar arrangement on planes. This or asking the pilot to land on some field. Shit was less official back than.
