Is there any historical equivalent to China's rise today?
In what sense? The US (between the end of the Civil War and the end of World War I) and Japan (1960s-1980s) had similar periods of rapid growth, the latter being more state-driven than the former. There are African and Latin American countries with even more rapid growth, but those are much smaller economies.

There are no Latin American countries with faster GDP growth than China in 2016.
Unless you are talking about some tiny Carribean island nation.

Ummm no
>US 1880-1950
Closer
Probably a mix between Japan and the US.
I've heard China compared to the Russian Empire just before WWI. A giant backwater that was quickly and alarmingly rising to the level of the larger players.

Japan in the 70's and 80's. A common tripe of sci-fi in the 80's was of Japanese global domination, because their economy was growing so incredibly fast.
Of course, it's easy to grow quickly from nothing, and vast tho China's economy is, their population is vaster still so their relative wealth is much lower than the gdp figures suggest.
