Darkest Hour produces some great Alt-Histories with mods.

>Playing a Fascist France run starting in 1914
>Play WW1 out till 1918
>Elect progressively right wing parties through 1924
>In 1924 Giacomo Matteotti wins the Italian general elections on a socialist platform
>Mid 1925 sees Mussolini's blackshirts and fascist supporters in full revolt throughout Italy
>By August Mussolini declared the formation of the Italian Social Republic, backed by Italian Naval and Marine forces, and Sicilian peasantry
>In early 1926 Fascist French forces invade in support of Mussolini, ending the Italian Republic

This led to a crazy late 20s-early 30s with Soviet backed socialist Germany toppling central European governments. WW2 started in 1936 when the German/Soviet coup attempt in Yugoslavia failed, leading Communist Hungary and Austria Invading. Yugoslavia was backed by fascist Italy, who quickly called in French support. The Germans and Russians declared war to back their puppets in the Balkans. Germany then launched a surprise attack through the lowlands in a repeat of the WW1 invasion of France. This brought the British in nominally on the side of France. By 1937 the "allied armies" were advancing in Germany and the Caucuses, but retreating in the Balkans and Italy. Crazy fucking war

Great game, not historical. That said, though, if you want entertainment play a game. If you want to learn history read a book, listen to a podcast or watch a documentary.

Fuck Liquoria.
>>
>>2297068
The fact that liquor happens to be the most valuable good in-game should tell you why.
>>
>>2296978
It isn't, DH babbies just can't handle anything more than divisions and corps and call the OOB "complexity for the sake of complexity" despite it having actual effects on the game that players have to take into account.

The fact that Kaiserreich, which is basically a visual novel for DH, is the most popular mod should tell you that DH's war mechanics are so shit and simplified that modders have to rely on events to make the game interesting.

>>
>>2300752
Not very hard. All the complexity is front-loaded. Once you understand the mechanics and how to exploit the AI, the games are fairly to play. You could always watch a video tutorial or LP series on Youtube. It might not be the /v/-approved way, but if can be helpful to see how a game plays out.

it's exactly the same shit as hoi2/dh just with shitton of provinces and with a lot of redundant technologies
>>
>>2300901
>with shitton of provinces

This is what makes it over-complicated. Hoi 2 had good sized provinces that kept the front simple enough for a human to grok, hoi3 just zooms waaaay on in and the result is that you literally can't micro manage your shit and are forced to rely on the AI, leaving you feeling that you're just watching the game play itself.

Agree on this. EUIV seems to be the less historically interesting game anyway. I prefer the dynastic intrigue of ck2. I don't need Sweden or France to take over all of Europe, I need my family to sit on their thrones, and have my family rule over all facets of life, eventually becoming the global ruling class. This game I'm in right now has my dynasty holding the papacy, most of the cardinals are my dynasty, all the little independent merchant republics are held by cadet houses of my family (I embargo whenever they don't and all nations ruled by my house join and we beat them down until my cadet branch is the only one with money enough to become elected, besides the prestige of my house helps), the caliphate is held by my dynasty (not the main empire, just the religious title), and France, aquitaine, Italy, England, and of course the Byzantine Empire.

This is true, although even without that stuff, your conquered land isn't assimilated nearly as easily as in EU4. Vic 2 doesn't hand out cores for free, nor do you get to choose accepted/non-accepted cultures. You can blob, but the result is an unstable empire instead of a bigger nation like in EU.

Absolutely NOTHING is as complicated as it seems.

TRADE
>Your country will have a main trade "node" (the squares that arrows go through on the trade map)
>For England, for example, it's "English Channel"
>The arrows show the direction "trade" goes
>Put a merchant in rich nodes and make him "point trade" toward your main node/a node that connects to yours
>This brings you more money

WAR
>Build spy network
>Fabricate claim
>Win enough to have maximum warscore/very high warscore
>Colour the map in as you like
>"Core" the areas using administrative points (one of the three types of mana along the top)
>Kill rebels until it's peaceful

COLONIES
>pick an explorer for your fleet (at least 3 light ships and 3 heavy ships)
>give him a mission to EXPLORE X
>give him a mission to EXPLORE X COAST
>click on coast
>send colonist
>if it's too far, level up your diplomatic technology or get exploration ideas or conquer land closer to it (for england, conquering ireland helps etc)
>Send troops there to stop natives, remember that most natives are weak as fuck so for 1500 natives 1300 men will probably do
>There are "colonial nations" (check wiki to see where) and they form when one person makes a bunch of colonies all next to each other, making them gives you a claim to most of that section of new world

It's not to bad, lad.

Go castille, reroll until you can make good allies (it seems to be a bit random who sets you as a rival between a few big nations) and take it slow.

As Castille you can usually eventually annex most of aragon and make Spain which makes you very powerful.

Incorporate the mechanics of EU4 and Vic 2 and HOI3/4 into CK2. As your state develops, more and more opportunities develop for characters within your realm, as privateers, conquistadores, MP's, industrialists, merchants, etc. The Merchant republic mechanics can be modified to simulate charter companies in the West and East Indies and corporations, tribal mechanics can be used worldwide, and more and more government and other positions can open up for characters as institutions expand and society develops.

>>
>>2306468
HOI4 is fucking easy, mate.

What are you struggling with?
Tell me who you want to play as/what you want to do.

HOI4 combat revolves around
>give an army a front line that isn't too long for them
>give them a battleplan to move forward in a direction that will capture victory points
>rinse and repeat
>>
>>2308190
Stop being a smartass. That only works if you have the advantage in army power on that line, either through numbers or better division design, which mostly means playing major powers without buffing other major ones.

The important things to learn in HOI4 is looking out of absolutely terrible terrain for some units type not to attack with terrible debuffs and how to design good divisions (golden 7 inf - 2 arty ratio for general use as front line holding and defense, armored with tons of breakthrough for attacks, motorized/mechanized for helping armor with overrunning). Rest is mostly knowing what to prioritize in tech tree, and other minor things.
>>
>>2308277
But division spamming with front lines is a guarantee of a win.
You can beat the axis as-for example-Poland without a navy, airforce or really any tank divisions.

I won my first 3 campaigns and conquered most of Europe without learning Naval Combat, I only used it to do naval invasions to spam more divisions.

The game is far too easy, only absolute newbies to the genre or people trying to fail will struggle with it.
It's why they literally included a setting to strengthen nations, base game even on high difficulty is far too easy.

You shouldn't be able to beat Germany as Belgium, fascist or not. And yet, it's very easy to.

The AI can't handle multiple front lines.
>>
>>2308288
>But division spamming with front lines is a guarantee of a win.
You can't just spam frontline and attack with smaller forces and still win, it's AI either way. Either you're talking about Germany driving forces to another frontline leaving nothing to defend your part or you're actually doing early attacks/optimizing divisions at the very least. But if it's frontline shift you're pretty much letting your allies do most of the job either way.
>You shouldn't be able to beat Germany as Belgium, fascist or not. And yet, it's very easy to.
Most of it stems from retarded fascist manpower bonuses without any repercussions. Hey you just mobilized your entire male population but everything is going fine with your production and economy. Or going fascist early on and doing shameless land grabs before the war is even supposed to start.

Overall Axis isn't really strong enough and I always give them buffs and sometimes turn ahistorical on just because it often results in easier time for them. As a newbie you could for example pick Canada, learn how stuff work and desant a few divisions in Europe and Allies would still win the war alone in 1943 depending on how long it takes them to invade Japan.

Whats the opinion on Empire: Total War?

For some reason whenever I play the U.S. the Dutch have always BLITZED Europe before I can get there.
>>
>>2303226
Theodoro beating Crimea + The Ottomans just because France decided to be a dick with it's great power status. Releases Byzantium from the Ottomans, Theodoro full annexes Crimea, Byzantium, Theodore, and France team up and rekt the Ottomans over 200 years until Byzantium controlled all of Anatolia and the Balkans and Theodoro controlled all of Crimea, the Caucasus, and a little of the Asian steppes.
>>
>>2308649
I haven't played Empire in a long fucking time, but I seem to remember the Dutch getting some sort of buff to their trade income, that means they can afford to buy and maintain larger armies then other european powers which means that you get implausible shit like this happening.
>>
>>2308649
Some people dislike it
I share Frederick the Great's boner for lines of infantry and the roar of lines of shot.
Playing Austria is fun. I convinced the Turks to like me while the Polish wanted to invade. Meanwhile, the Prussians got their ass kicked by the Poles and the Saxons, so I took Saxony and Berlin (from the Saxons) and pushed east to take Warsaw while allying with the Prussians. Then Russia allied with PLC and fought in the east, while the Turks stand still doing nothing, although at war with Russia.
Meanwhile, France was being a dick, as they do, taking Spain and allying with Portugal, making enemies of Spain and England, so I also marched west, taking France and Italy, leaving the Franks in Spain.
In other words: Austria, Prussia, England, Spain vs France, Poland, Mughals, and Russia
Meanwhile, the Dutch took the Rhineland and Bavaria, but are content with me, and Sweden can't overpower Hannover.

One of the best campaigns I ever had was in ETW as the Ottomans. After realizing that I could get several universities up and running in a handful of turns, I cut ties with my vassals, sold off indefensible border territories for tech and friendship, and forced a republican revolution to acquire the best leader and cabinet possible before moving onto constitutional monarchy for the sake of diplomacy.

Ended up so far ahead in the tech race that I was taking on Persian, Russian, and Austrian armies much larger than mine and still wrecking them hard each time while building up an army to inevitably take Vienna for a complete prestige victory.

Everything changed when the Maratha Republic attacked. A huge united India blob sending wave after wave at my eastern borders made me commit everything I had and still I got pushed back to Anatolia. I ended up making peace with Europe and a strong alliance with Poland, Prussia, and Britain at first to guard against a two-front war but eventually to help support Europe as the Marathas landed an invasion force in the Netherlands and began conquering France and Western Germany. Shit was insane, and turned what should have been another Ottoblob curbstomp campaign into a world war where battle hardened nizams stood shoulder to shoulder with Prussian line infantry supported by Polish cavalry against stack after stack of Sikh warriors carrying their war wheel banner.

sid meier's civilization + paradox + total war

It would require a 3d globe which might be a bit of a leap programming-wise, but the globe is more of a guideline.

Tiles/provinces built by the players or AI (or determined during map creation) are the business end of game mechanics and play like a paradox game or the total war campaign map. They build a city and it automatically claims an area. The map is used to determine the properties of the province and these properties are saved so they don't have to be calculated over and over again.

Provinces have minds of their own, to build an empire you have to keep their loyalty by maintaining lines of communication and supply lines for your troops. If they are cut they will either push for autonomy until they are all but independent or you will have to war with them knowing your troops can't reach them. Technology and development determines if you can establish supply lines, otherwise the province remains tribal.

Armies play on the globe map, but they have a limited amount of supplies (depletion depending on the supply lines to the province and pillaging). They have to return to the province city if they want to camp out somewhere. Forts built between borders can cut supply lines and may have to be taken. More forts are needed the longer the border. and the fewer the natural barriers like rivers and broken terrain (all calculated during province creation). Battle terrain depends on the location of armies on the globe map.

Each coastal province has an ocean "province" created next to it. Trade routes passing through it can be blocked. Trade is determined by a hierarchy, there is 1 trade center for every 8 or so connected provinces, the owner of these trade centers can then try to establish connections with other trade centers or oversea provinces by finding a route on the global map.

if you are playing a small nation eat up your weaker neighbours 1 by 1 before allies guarantee ppl

use your army mana to design infantry dvisions with 2:1 inf:arti
10:5 works great

use encirclement tactics
build mil factories
mobilize your population

the combat is ww1 style thanks to the artillery trumps all method

I fucking hate myself every time i remember those days, it's like looking back on home videos and remembering how fucking autistic you were as a kid.

Third age with DaC is bretty damn good, but it's fantasy

Europa Barbarorum 2 is bretty fuging great as well, I'd say it's better than SS

Regarding submods, check what's going on with Titanium submod. Might be a decent one.

It must be a game mechanism.

yeah i was kidding
Unfortunately CK2 doesn't have mixed race portraits

A Mount & Blade mod or a stand-alone game with a single county as the focus, where you either start out as the count or rise up to become one. Instead of nonstop warfare have a lot of management and building, allowing you to turn a dilapidated backwater into a prosperous and advanced land with a hands on approach - riding around to hold court, resolve disputes, oversee construction, train soldiers, and subjugate rebels, bandits, and raiders.
>>
>>2312936
That would be comfy as fuck. Would be nice if the game strictly contained that one county but the world outside of the county would change and you could hear about what all was going on.
>>
>>2313723
There could be a few other counties, perhaps enough for a proper duchy, but I think it could complicate things and turn it back into regular M&B with its constant warfare. Maybe force everyone into a single faction, and designate a site where two lords could meet to do battle. But you could still have outside happenings in the form of armies passing through, or even invading.
>>
>>2312855
Maybe she was pregged before she arrived.
>>
>>2312936
You could totally do this in M&B, and I wish someone would. Most mods try to scale the combat up to a level the engine just wasn't made to handle, and it's always felt a bit ridiculous that you can spend 4 days to ride across 5 different biomes and kingdoms made up of a few dozen villages, 3 or 4 towns, and led by kings who only have a few hundred soldiers to their name.

It's the same with Total War. Everyone's obsessed with kingdoms and continent spanning warfare, but the games could be so much more refined if they didn't force themselves to branch out like that.

Make it a real RPG experience with lots of NPCs to run across and interact with. Your knights aren't just generic troops, they're named barons and other nobles with their own stories and politics. Also, have the ability to go undercover in disguise like when you have to sneak into town in M&B, but just to be able to spy on people without them knowing who you are.

Sounds like a super comfy Harvest Moon/Rune Factory clone, but with more scope and authority than a kid on a farm.
>>
>>2308649
It's a giant fucking mess but still oddly endearing.

Fall of the Samurai surpasses it in every way as a gunpowder Total War, though.

Wouldn't be complete without some waifus though.

Barely a problem.

>Daughter of courtier who is also your childhood playmate
>Tsundere hostage from a noble family defeated in a prior war
>Idealistic and tireless mayor's daughter of a town always coming to you with plans and projects
>Sickly pilgrim recuperating at your manor/hospice while giving alms to the poor

And so on and so forth.

In keeping with traditional pastourelles, it should be a wandering shepherdess that the PC can flirt and seduce and/or rape.

The witch should instead be a cheeky rural prostitute and part-time sorceress/herbalist who is a regular at court trials for expert sex testimony.

CK2 is fun, especially mods like HiP and GoT, but gets boring when you get too good at it. But roleplaying/not blobbing/playing "historically" makes the game fun again
