Provincial government under the command of Pontius Pilate, along with his allies in the Temple priesthood who strongly supported Jesus' execution.

Jesus was killed for sedition/treason and not blasphemy, although years of constant insults against the priesthood would naturally piss anyone off.

It should also be pointed out that declaring oneself "the son of God" was neither treason nor blasphemy. Declaring oneself the "messiah" is treason but not blasphemy; and Jesus' response to the question "Are you the Messiah, the son of the Blessed one?" ("I am, and you will see the Son of Man, seated at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.") wouldn't hold up in a courtroom even 2000 years ago as him acknowledging himself as the son of Man (although he did acknowledge himself as the messiah with his response).

Christ, obviously. As a man he willfully violated provincial Roman law, and if believed to be an incarnate divinity, would qualify as the supreme cause over subordinate human agents like the Jews or Pilate as well. How can anyone be ultimately responsible for an act willed by God himself?

Also, Jesus' family for encouraging him because they saw how much money he could make.

Also if anyone wants to know what the title "son of man" means, ultimately no one really knows. The only real grasp we have of what it means is that Stephen (the first Christian martyr) was killed by his fellow Jews precisely for declaring Jesus to be "the son of man".

Ultimately calling yourself "son of God" might make your fellow Jews think you were a weirdo, and calling yourself the "messiah" would probably have you ratted out to the authorities; but for some reason calling yourself "son of man" really pissed the Jews off.

It's clear the the Jews murdered him, hence peter telling the Jewish crowds in acts "this Christ, you handed up to lawless men and had crucified."

In his painful death which he allowed to happen he made a karmic-ish redemption for those who would authentically accept it, however.

Why was there a rise in apocalyptic sentiment after Roman occupation as opposed to earlier occupation by the Seleucids and Egyptians, etc.? Why Rome? Was it a coincidence? Was it really because Pompey entered the chamber of "the Holiest of Holy" even though he commanded it to be purified after?
