Check Billboard hits between ('39)'41-'45. Here's a few tidbits though:

So varied due to the soldiers taste in music, the growth of the music industry over the '50s/early '60s, and the length of the war there is no point in saying everyone listened to X. Most Vietnam era movies show late '60s and early '70s rock & roll, but most soldiers were white country boys who probably didn't listen to too much of that and instead listened to Marty Robbins, Cash and the like. Regardless, just check the #1 hits between ('55)'64/'65 and '73.

Some of the more famous:
>#1 when the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution passed

>A few #1s from the mid point in the war ('68/'69)

The Gaye song was #1 when Fortunate Son reached it's peak.

>#1 when 'Murica pulled out

>Korea
Would have varied as much as Vietnam as the war went later, but most of it wouldn't be much different than WW2. Billboard indicates:

>#1 at beginning of war

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rjO0eGeWME

>#1 in Middle

>#1 at End

Only for the second half (of the important parts) of the war and despite being the "quintessential" Vietnam song due to its protest, it wasn't as popular as common myth dictates. It's far more popular due to its post-war memory than it ever was during the war. It never climbed above #3 on the charts and spent most of its time below #10.
