They will never understand, OP. Most people on /his/ left-wing students at college whose only prospect of a good job is at civil service. They idolize France for having build a massive bureaucracy, and hate the Holy Roman Empire for being a descentralized realm ruled by law, custom and traditional rights, instead of bureaucrats in a centralized government authority.

But that doesn't mean I disagree with you; imho if the locals had been a little more uppity and had more frequently been able to impress their will upon their rulers, it may have been clearly superior.
As it is, both systems were pretty meh to live in. But in hindsight the empire was nicer. Also I come from a free imperial city, so how could I not be biased.
