From then on every attack on their tribes, however justified, is perceived as a personal attack.

Religion and politics are both major influences in how we shape our lives, so it's no surprise we someone would get defensive regarding something they deem to be apart of their figurative bedrock.
I don't really see how sports are controversial though, at least I've never met anyone that would actually make discussing sports controversial.

Mist sports fans realize that at the end of the day sports are rather meaningless and will talk and take shit about in stride.
Then you have some people who use the local soccer team as a recruiting tool for their neonazi/ antifa / lgbt/ whatever / group and as an excuse to commit violence on the weekend.
