Why was he overshadowed by Bolivar?
Was He?

When do you ever hear about him outside of the countries he was relevant in?
You don't hear a lot from Bolivar but you actually hear of him.

I don't know He's pretty relevant in my country

yep
San Martin is relevant in Argieland and Chile but Bolivar is known in the entire subcontinent.
Now I have an excuse to post this shit.

He's also pretty well known in other continents.

Because, unlike Bolivar, he didn't wanted any recognition.
He fucked off when they needed him the most.
He tried to become King of Peru, which made him look like a despotic narcissist. He did win a title called Liberator of Peru if I'm correct. They also offered him the position of Supreme Director of Chile, but he turned it down.
Reminder that Sucre was the greatest person of that entire era.

>Why was he overshadowed by Bolivar?
Because all the latino immigrants in the USA are from Mexico, Central America and Northern South America.
Southern South Americans immigrate to Argentina, so the Americans don't interact with Bolivians, Peruvians, Chileans or Argentines... the countries where San Martin was relevant.
Since the USA is the megaphone which amplifies to the world the cultures of the nations that send them immigrants, San Martin remains more obscure.
