Is nuclear winter a legit thing?

I've heard some people say that it would happen and fuck over pretty much everyone, but I've heard some people say there wouldn't be enough firestorms and plenty of people would have a chance of survival.

This is assuming a large scale nuclear war.

I seriously doubt it would be mutual destruction. The Russians might get a few nukes off but we'd take them out before they could respond with their completely overmatched intelligence and logistics and utterly inferior armed forces in both resources and technology. Billions would die, but not everyone.
