That certainly wasn't my intention. I just wanted a relatively neutral explanation of its rise and fall in print.

I don't think you can find a purely objective book explaining the history, but there are plenty of first-hand accounts in print. Obviously these are going to biased but if you keep an eye out for it, you can see beyond it.
I haven't read Ian Smith's Bitter Harvest yet but I would like to. The last Rhodesian book I read was Three Sips of Gin, the story of a Canadian ex-pat who joins the Selous Scouts. That was pretty good.
