China without the Communists

It would probably end up as a Brazil/India equivalent in form, with less GDP growth than today's China but relatively more individual liberties (on paper). The problem is that there are just so many Chinese to care for/give voice to, so there would be massive bureaucratic failures with any less centralization than what it has now. Poor rural people still getting screwed, Coastal/inland divide like the US's North/South divide, etc.

Thinking about it now, though, the very worst thing that could have happened would be for businesses to buy up Chinese rural land for farming like how they did in other countries. China's population is so large that one major environmental disaster on a river could affect tens of millions of people. It's hard to believe that China will ever have a truly effective regulatory system without authoritarian practices.

Perhaps not having Mao around to do stupid shit like encourage farmers to make steel in their backyards would have helped, but mainly China is behind because they have way too fucking much population.

Taiwan was a solution to the Warlord problem, so I see no reason why in our little aut-hist session here we can't assume they have a stroke of luck and actually succeed in string rid of said warlords without being forced onto an island.

Not him, but they were. Sure, they had (finally, after years of attempting) chased the Communists away from the Southeast, but the KMT never really managed to get direct control of the areas they vacated; they were still drawing almost all of their manpower and their resource support from that core brick shaped area running from Shanghai to Chengdu. They could win every battle and still lose the war, because they had no method of actually ending it, or preventing new insurgencies from rising in the place of Mao's gang.
