Both leaders tried to portray the crisis as a victory for their nations.

But in all honesty...
Who won the stalemate?
Which country blinked first?

The US was forced to remove their missiles in Turkey so the Soviets won.

Which country won the cold war?
>>
Khrushchev lost. The conflict was one of public portrayal, how one presented things, more so than it was the movement of missiles. Even with the mutual removal of missiles, no one gave a shit about the turkish missiles and everything about the cuban ones. So when both were withdrawn, it was the cuban ones that got the attention. That's defeat, that's humiliation.
Dude could have, instead of simply moving in the missiles, used them as a threat. "Take yours out of turkey or we move nukes into Cuba" and then when the mutual withdrawal occured it would have seemed that Kennedy was giving into Khrushchev.

Neither, to be honest.

Well, most of the cold war was pure and simple posturing. That was simply the nature of the conflict. Shouldn't conflicts be judged by how they are waged?
>>
>>2244173
Honestly it was less a victory and more of a non-loss. Earth didn't blow up.
>>
>>2244190
The USSR.
>>
The US. It's very simple. The USSR planned to move warheads to Cuba and they were forced to withdraw them by the US.
>>
Everybody won by not dying in a nuclear holocaust.

True in the U.S., but was it true in Russia?

This. Nobody got anything out of the whole fiasco except maybe JFK's loathing of his military leaders
>>
>>2244173

dumb thread but one interesting thing to note about the event is that JFK immediately prior to the cuban missile crisis had been reading about the outbreak of ww1, which no doubt had some influence on his thinking when plenty of military thinkers were encouraging him to ante up the hostility

The Soviets completely humiliated the USA. Khrushchev forced the US to remove their rockets from Turkey and Italy. The first time the US was forced into a major military rollback. A great propaganda coup for the Soviets.

Turkey/Italy isn't anywhere near as close to major Russian cities as Cuba was to the United States. so that argument falls flat.

The Jupiter missiles had more than enough range!
>>
>>2244173
It was a victory for the world. Survival beats glory. If you disagree now, reconsider after you have children.
>>
The Soviets publicly removed their missiles from Cuba. The US privately removed their obsolete Jupiter missiles from Turkey that were already being supplemented and replaced by the Navy's Polaris missiles.
The whole reason for putting missiles in Cuba was because the Soviets lacked a credible ICBM force at the time (a dozen or so missiles sitting in the open with reaction times measured in days). The US already had an operational ICBM force, a much larger (and forward deployed) bomber force, and a growing SLBM force. The USSR didn't match the US in delivery capability until the end of the decade.
I'd say the US came out on top from a PR perspective and from a military perspective. Notice how Khrushchev was overthrown less than two years later.
