I can't attest for its general accuracy, anymore than anyone else, but the six-volume fictional novel "The Clan of the Cave Bear" offered an insightful journey through a time when there was little technology, when priorities were clearer and people had a stake and part in their own survival. She intertwined numerous examples of how they might have discovered and invented things. However, she did tend to go on about the different kinds of animals at times, sometimes for paragraphs, merely naming them.
Otherwise, an enjoyable read.
