Could they have been viable states? Or did their nature as artificial nations doom them from the beginning?
I wanna know what the deal with this is

Just artificially-produced states trying to abuse their newfound freedom

czechoslovakia was doing fine i think
the problem in yugoslavia was serbs
serbs were hardcore nationalists and imperialists, they wanted to dominate and assimilate the other nations, instead of melt away in a united yugoslav nation

>Not all artificial in the first place
Yugoslavia was not artificial, southern panslavism was a thing for slavic nationalists during the 19th and 20th century.
There were certainly national differences between the lot, but no more than that between the disparate germany states that formed the german confederation, or the italian states that united under the kingdom of itay.
National identity in cases like here or rather dynamic, folks take on or drop such reflexively. Sandwiched between two empires, one can see why many balkan slavs turned to pan-slavism.

Czechoslovakia was fine. The people didn't even want to split.
Yugoslavia was terrible, because the Serbs monopolized the power.
Bump for more info. Could the two states have survivied?

In Czechoslovakia most Slovaks didn't even wanted to secede and most Czechs didn't gave two fucks about it.

Well, Czechs consider Slovaks their bumbling hick cousina from the countryside.
That's what Czechs have told me, anyway. So - no resentment, maaaybe unwilling to pay for them.

If there would be referendum such proposal would be shot-down even today people don't see reason why we splitted.
Politics decided to separate state which was big decision and they felt like they have authority they should be jailed honestly.

>people who speak the same language
>not viable
The failure of the south slav project was in the politicians.

>Serbs monopolized the power
Kingdom of Yugoslavia, yes.
Communist Yugoslavia, only in the late 80s. Having not much power earlier and even getting completely castrated in 74 (and said castration of power directly lead to the rise of nationalism)
