Why turn down a crown? Sure he fought to get rid of one king, but it would have had far more benefit in the long run for what he wanted.

It was purely symbolic, he fully intended in starting a North Korea-esque hereditary dictatorship. But he failed to realize that everyone just capitulated because he was an immense asshole not because they actually wanted him to be king

Which they suspended? Cromwell didn't need Parliament either. He was trying to establish a dictatorial dynasty and could have made it legitimate had he taken the title of king when offered.
