The passion of Joan of Arc is easily one of the most beautiful movies ever made.
I'm partial to Pasolini's Trilogy of Life (Canterbury Tales, The Decameron, and Arabian Nights) lots of sex, nudity, violence, pretty awesome stuff. They're fun and they set a great historical tone.
