They triggered Catholics and the duke of Guise. Catherine Medici gave them some lenience with the 1st edict of saintgermain. But Catholics started chimping out. That's how the 1st out of 8th Huguenot wars started. This went on until 1498 when Henry IV or Henry of Navarre, the 1st Bourbon king, signed the edict of Nantes where he gave em the same rights as the Catholics had.
Things were ok until the priest (Richellu) of Louis XIII came to power. He was a die hard Catholic and wanted nothing to do with Huguenots. When Louis XIV came to power he started deporting them and they went to Holland and Prussia, they were welcome there because of religious tolerance. It's interesting that they managed to stay in good shape, because Prussia and later Russia had a lot of Jesuits, who were "banned" in Europe in 18th century.
