>>
>Why did the rising happen?
It was believed that the Home Rule issue would be ignored if they didn't so anything and that there would never be a more opportune moment to strike given that Britain was distracted by the war.
>what sparked Irish ultranationalism?
The militarisation of Ulster Unionism and how the British government turned a blind eye to it
>How was the war of independence won?
Guerilla warfare
>Why did a civil war follow?
Ideological disagreements among the figures of the war of independence
>How did the famine, etc effect all of this?
The famine caused a lot of discussion about land ownership and British treatment/neglect of Ireland. It also basically wiped out traditional Irish culture and language and a lot of nationalist groups like the IRB were very concerned about this

>late 1800s early 1900s Ireland

The decline of the Home Rule League and Irish Parliamentary Party.

Charles Stewart Parnell and John Redmond stop being the main voice of Home Rule and Irish Nationalism and you start see more radical groups like Sinn Fein take control of the Irish Nationalist movement (and by extension the Home Rule movement - though only as a means to an end).

>Why did the rising happen?
Due to various political changes within the United Kingdom, the Third Home Rule Bill finally passed. However it was postponed until after the conclusion of the First World War.
Importantly, the leadership of both the Unionist and Nationalists supported the participation of Ireland in the war effort.

There was, however, fear that the British government were backsliding on implementation of Home Rule and this radical fringe decided that the war provided the opportunity to use Germany as a tool to reach a fully independent Ireland.

While various schemes were proposed between the Germans and Irish (German troops landing on Irish soil, crowning a German prince as King of Ireland), the main aid given were armaments.

>How was the war of independence won?
It wasn't really won insofar that the Irish threw the British out, but they brought the British to the table through the IRAs bombing and assassination campaign that drew disproportional response from the Royal Irish Constabulary including the 1920 Bloody Sunday. The British government looked at the spiraling cost (of both lives and pounds) with no end in sight and thought it best to come to a negotiated settlement (although by the IRAs estimations, they were near defeat by the time the British called for a ceasefire).

>Why did a civil war follow?
The structure of Ireland following the Irish War of Independence was negotiated between the nationalists and the British Government.

The Anglo-Irish treaty that came out of this negotiation was unacceptable to many nationalists as it had Ireland as a constitutional monarchy under the dominion of the United Kingdom instead of the independent Irish Republic they sought.

the Pro-Treaty side took a gradualist approach, that it was "the freedom to achieve freedom"

The Pro-Treaty side defeated the Anti-Treaty side (although they lost their two leaders in Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith) and the leader of the Anti-Treaty side, Eamon DeValera, would come to dominate Irish politics for decades after.

How did the famine, etc effect all of this?
Directly, caused a growth in the Irish Nationalist movement and later as a frequent example used of British Oppression.

Indirectly, lots of Irish moved to America and became wealthy and politically influential. These became important supporters for Irish Nationalists.

>Why did the rising happen?

Which one?

I mean, I blame Cromwell personally.

The Normans took over Ireland too, but weren't ridiculous cunts about it and liked the people there. Cromwell was just a prod traitor with delusions of grandeur.

Why call it 'ultra'nationalism?
>>
>>2223631
>attributes irish independence to an event more than two centuries before said event.
wat
>>
>>2223637

cause it makes Irish nationalist ethno-socialism seem more radical than it really is
>>
>>2223654

Are you seriously suggesting the English Civil War didn't have any significant part to play in the subjugation of the isle?
>>
>>2223679
We're talking about Irish nationalist feeling in the early 20th century, Cromwell has very little to do with that
>>
>>2223708
>Irish nationalist feeling in the early 20th century
>Cromwell has very little to do with that

do you think people exist in century bubbles with no memory of the past?

People in Ireland curse Cromwells name to this day. Literally the Orange order STILL EXISTS.

1689

1798

1867

1916

it's not as if suddenly the Irish suddenly started hating subjugation again you know.
>>
>>2223679
The same as the French and Indian War had a significant part to play in World War II
>>
>>2223754

not even close to a decent analogy try harder

I wonder what possible series of events could have led to the subjugation of Ireland? In particular, I'd like to trace the roots of the sectarian divide between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland.

>spends 5 seconds on google

WOULD LOOK AT THAT

CROMWELL DID SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT

The famine is by far the most significant event in Ireland's history. As part of the UK in the C19, 2 million Irish starved and a further 2 million forced to leave, halving the countries population from 8mil to 4mil. During the whole duration of the famine England continued to export tonnes of food out of the country and the natives were forced to rely on the poorest land (that could only grow the potato crop). So yes, that created a lot of resentment against British rule. Then when WWI came alot of Irish died in the British army and those that managed to come back wanted independence (some of the original IRA had served in the Brit army). I would say the famine was instrumental to wanting independence.
