Augustus built nothing. The Roman empire was weak and pathetic compared to the republic, and the republic was built with foresight and intelligence of the Senate. Rome would never have fallen if the damned Cesareans hadn't ruined everything.

More interesting is that those two huge armies consisted almost entirely of celts and brits on one side and germans and dacians on the other, both trying to install an emperor they favored, with only like 30% being actual legionnaries and both generals at the head of these armies were african.

Really interesting that the governors of any given province were from the opposite side of the empire to prevent shit like this from happening and yet they built pretty much the biggest armies in roman history to take over and their armies were insanely loyal too

Sorry fuck boys, most underrated emperor coming through. He was so good that the Senate couldn't stand how powerful he had become.

His reign brought stability to the Roman currency and made it as strong as it ever was. Not to mention his massive building program and protection of the frontiers.

It was solely due to the greedy, backstabbing nature of Romans bred into them by their education and culture. That and the soldiers being obsessed with emperors having blood heirs instead of adopted sons.

He was probably one of the most successful in the history of the empire. He reigned for a long twenty years in a period where most emperors were brutally snuffed out in their bed or while pissing on campaign.

I could list more and go into specifics but i'm knackered. If Diocletian (and Aurelian earlier) hadn't come along the Western Roman Empire would have collapsed a century earlier, and the East would never have lasted a thousand years longer.

Diocletian's one of the most overrated Emperors.
His economic reforms were an utter failure. He has to be given credit for at least trying to sort out the mess that was the Roman economy however, I'll admit.
The Tetrarchy was a pretty bad idea and only survived as long as he did.

Really his main accomplishment was living a long time, as opposed to almost every other Emperor of the Third Century. Pretty much everything else he is credited with was actually achieved under Claudius Gothicus and Aurelian.

The last century of the Republic's existence was defined by almost continuous turmoil and political gridlock. Julius Caesar represented the last real attempt to reform the system from within, and when his political opponents murdered him for it the population overwhelmingly sided with Caesar's heirs in the military over the ultra-conservatives in the senate and ran them out of town.

Augustus is basically responsible for Rome's transition from buildings made out of brick and timber to buildings made out of concrete. His massive public works project is the reason he enjoyed the longest and most peaceful reign of any emperor, because he was basically taking on public responsibilities that the actual government was incapable of preforming.
