They crashed and burned because they were ignorant. When it crashed the ends of its lands returned to farming, to its previous way of life. These days, those on the fringes will not be able to return to the land for survival (contaminated) but also not able to survive the withdrawal of government support and all their tech addictions they cannot afford to repair. The fringes are not a good place to be when governments cut and slash funding.
