Your assuming that being a democracy makes you Western. It does not. Having Western values makes you Western. Even if America did fall, you would have to liberalise a lot more before you would be able to take over the mantle of protector of the western world.

I often wonder what role Brazil would have had in modern world affairs if FDR had succeeded in getting them a permanent seat on the UN security council with the other big five (US, UK, USSR, France, China) after WWII. The Soviets and UK blocked it, though.
