Chinese drive the hate mainly because protectionism and nationalism fever. There's also the islands that Chinese want and South China Sea that Chinese want.

Historical reasons aside, these are the main thing keeping it alive.

Japs on the other hand see modern Chinese nationalism and become scared of their rabidness. Their enroach on to the islands and South China Sea is cutting into the fears of Chinese aggression.

Japs also have nationalism that view themselves as superior to China due to them being industrialized, however that view is minor. The main thing is the above, Chinese nationalism and their aggression.

Competing regional rivals. Japan has bad history with china anyway, and now China is asserting its dominance. Japan previously was the go too for the west in SEA but is losing that position as the US and EU look to China, SK and other asian nations more than Japan.
