Why was the Austrian army in WW1 such a massive fucking piece of shit?
>>2186386
Because Germans have historically been shit at war, which is why they always lose.
it turns out multiculturalism is not a strength
>>2186386
Officers were mostly German speakers.
Soldiers were mostly not German speakers.
>>2186391
And yet if the officer corps were more multicultural things might've been better

would be interesting to have flags on this board, that way one could better speculate about the origins of the occaisonal outbursts of buttpain

This is partly a meme. The Austro-Hungarians didn't do that badly in WW1. They held Italy at a stalemate for three years and had some notable successes on the Eastern Front. In fact I'm willing to bet they roughly broke even with the Russians on losses overall, considering they were always the majority of Central Powers forces on that front, and losses on that front were overall 2-1 in favor of the Central Powers.
Anyway. Aside from the usual issues you always hear about (e.g. language issues, morale issues, troops not wanting to fight an enemy of a particular nationality), most of their problems were down to absolutely shit leadership. Under German command they faired much better.

Fixed that for you.
Low military budget compared to the other great powers, even in proportion to population and GDP
Peace-time army was the smallest (as a percentage of population) of the Great powers in Europe (0.9% of the population)
Also read somewhere that a comparably small percentage of young men was drafted for obligatory military service in peace times
While the professional officer corps was polyglott, the language skills of reserve officers were often limited
A sizable amount of professional soldiers was killed early on in Galicia
