Can one of you explain to me the purpose of Germany and Japan being allies during WWII? As far I know neither really helped one another fighting and the only common denominator seems to be America. So why did they become friends? Or if they weren't actually allies and they just so happen to be at war at the same time, why are we told that they were allies?
Both were against communism
iirc it was a defensive treaty only, technically Germany was only obligated to help Japan if it were attacked

Initially started out as an alliance against the Soviet Union, but the Japanese chimped out with Pearl Harbor.

This is correct. The treat of a Japanese attack forced the soviets to maintain a large defensive force in eastern Russia.

>japanese
>anti communist
Why did they invade Nationalist China when they were at war with communists?
Really makes you think...
>>2180395
Because Japan has no natural resources to speak of.
>>2180395
They didn't attack China to help the communists, they attacked China to take their shit.
What was going through the heads of Nazi leaders when Japan bombed Pearl Harbour?

>Fuck this shit, Let's hope Hitler doesn't sperg ou-nevermind

Apparently Hitler wasn't aware of it, but knew it was unavoidable.

They were assisting them.
Rape of Nanking is communist propaganda.

Japan and Germany teamed up against Russia. Japan had already obliterated Russia's Navy prior to the agreements like -Tripartate and Anti-Comintern.
Basically, Japan was looking to expand and control a greater sphere of influence- and Germany along with Italy were willing to allow that expansion in the Asian sea/continent areas.
Germany was already looking to expand- but was afraid of Russia. With Japan set up on the southeastern boarder of Russia- it was no biggy for them to wage full land/sea war with Russia- should Russia choose to head west to deal with Germany. Russia wouldn't have been able to defend both assaults- so it was a good reason for Russia not to antagonize Germany's expansion.
it's important to note that while this is going on the UK and Russia are forming the same pincer alliance- threatening Germany on all fronts.
Japan had historically held alliances with the U.S. and U.K.- but was jilted with shitty trade deals and disarmament treaties.

They hated not having natural resources more than they hated communism.

"The Axis" was just a buzzword to describe all of America's enemies. There really was no alliance between the Germans and Japanese.

massive surge in nationalism combined with the government's combined goal of expanding their "rightful" territory.
