They knew how to use colours...
Why do Aztec drawings usually seem so simplistic by comparison?
Nice pictures btw, good thread OP

A lot of the writing has disappeared, but some of the captions in the mural can be read. It's about a battle waged between Bonampak and an enemy city. The city of Yaxchilan who was the overseer of Bonampak and far more powerful apparenly also participated. The ruler of Bonampak is Yajaw Chaan Muwan, and his overlord of Yaxchilan possibly Shield Jaguar IV. The mural was dedicated November 11, 791. By this time though Yajaw Chaan Muwan of Bonampak had probably died. The whole mural is a narrative spanning three rooms. It begins in room 2, which was the battle between Bonampak and some other city. Yajaw Chaan Muwan appears here, and later as well as other lords. The battle begins with charging of two sides, fighting and later capturing of enemy captives. These captives appear again as well later. Prior to this, in room 1 which is seen first by the viewer one sees lords bringing tribute to a seated royal family. The tribute is said to contain 5 bundles each of 8,000 cacao beans (a currency at the time). There;s also musicians celebrating and playing music. Then we see lords getting dressed and preparing to partake in the dancing. The chaotic battle scene is what follows, but this presumably happened prior to the events just described. The final room shows captives begging for mercy at the foot of the lords, one is already decapitated with his brains falling out. What's interesting is the agony of the captives is so accentuated and even eroticized it almost overshadows the lords to whom these captives are being presented too, which are probably Shield Jaguar IV and Yajaw Chaan Muwan. They do this under the supervision of 4 constellations up above represented as animals and figures. The mural concludes with bloodletting of the tongues from the royal women and the lords dancing atop a pyramid with music.
