They weren't allowed to work the fields in the middle ages so they worked from their ghettos and became jewellers, merchants and moneylenders. Their fortunes grew over time and generations, the son taking over the father's business. Moneylending was the most profitable thing they could do and eventually they were able to live off that alone, which lead to them being seen as greedy parasites.

When the Jews began moving into Europe they were prohibited from owning land and becoming farmers, from becoming merchants, and from a lot of other occupations. One of the few options left to them was money lending. They passed the trade onto their children and over time the Jews became really successful at it and gained the dubious reputation they have now.
