Augustine was kind of a "religious tourist," dabbling in one kind or another until he eventually settled on Chalcedonian Christianity. What appears to have dissuaded him from continuing as a Manichean was meeting a guy the other Manicheans lauded as one of the greatest teachers of their faith and a genius, Faustus. Augustine spent some time with Faustus and was extremely curious, asking the guy about a bazillion questions about Manichean teachings, the nature of reality, philosophy, etc. In the end he wasn't very impressed by the answers Faustus gave, felt the guy was overrated, and became disillusioned with Manicheaism as a result.
